Aussie…Australian? What’s the difference?

In this new world of designer dog breeds and poodle everything, Aussiedoodles and Australian Labradoodles have caused some confusion due to their similar names. However, these two breeds have distinct characteristics that set them apart.  

ORIGIN:

   - Aussiedoodle are a crossbreed between Australian Shepherds and Poodles. They inherit traits from both parent breeds, including intelligence, athleticism, and a friendly temperament.

   - Australian Labradoodles, on the other hand, have a more complex background. They were initially bred in Australia in the late 20th century with the aim of creating hypoallergenic or asthma friendly service dogs. The Australian Labradoodle typically includes Labrador Retrievers, Poodles, and English and/or Irish Cocker Spaniels in their ancestry.

APPEARANCE:

   - Aussiedoodles often come in a wide range of coat colors and hair textures, depending on their parentage. They can have the wavy or curly coat of a Poodle or the straight, dense coat of an Australian Shepherd. Breeders offering this new popular mix will often produce first or second generation puppies which can result in unpredictable coats.

   - Australian Labradoodles tend to have a more consistent appearance, with a curly or wavy coat that is usually low-shedding and hypoallergenic. They come in various sizes, including miniature, medium, and standard. Breeders will often refer to them as “multigenerational” which means puppies are the result of generations of breeding consistently both Australian Labradoodle parents together generation over generation vs the start of a purebred Poodle, Labrador or Cocker Spaniel.

SIZE:

   - Aussiedoodle typically range in size from small to medium-large, depending on the size of their Poodle parent. They can weigh anywhere from 25 to 70 pounds.

   - Australian Labradoodles come in a wider range of sizes, including miniature (15-25 pounds), medium (30-45 pounds), and standard (45-65 pounds).

TEMPERAMENT:

   - Aussiedoodles are known for their intelligence, energy, and loyalty. They are highly trainable and thrive in environments where they receive plenty of mental and physical stimulation.

   - Australian Labradoodles are prized for their gentle, sociable nature. They make excellent family pets and are often used as therapy, emotional support and/or assistance dogs due to their calm demeanor and people-oriented personality.

PURPOSE:

   - Aussiedoodles excel in various roles, including as family pets, agility competitors, and working dogs. Their versatility and intelligence make them well-suited for a range of activities and tasks.

   - Australian Labradoodles were originally bred to be hypoallergenic service dogs, and they continue to excel in this role today. They are also valued as therapy dogs, companions for individuals with disabilities, and beloved family pets.
