Welcoming your new puppy

YAY! It’s puppy pick up day!!! Thank you for choosing Sugar Cane Doodles. Bringing home a new puppy is a thrilling and heartwarming experience that marks the beginning of a beautiful journey. The first few days with your furry bundle of joy are precious and pivotal, setting the tone for a strong and loving bond. In this short blog, we’ll explore some essential tips to help you make the most of those initial days and ensure a smooth transition for both you and your new companion.

Day 1: The Arrival

The day you bring your puppy home is a momentous occasion, filled with excitement and anticipation. Remember that your pup might feel a bit overwhelmed by the sudden change in environment. To ease their transition, create a comfortable and secure space where they can rest and explore. A cozy crate or designated puppy-proof area can help them feel safe.

Day 2: Establishing a Routine

Puppies thrive on routine, so it’s important to establish a basic schedule from the start. Set consistent times for feeding, potty breaks, playtime, and naps. This predictability helps your puppy feel secure and aids in housebreaking. Be patient during potty training, as accidents are to be expected.

Day 3: Bonding Time

Building a strong bond with your new puppy requires quality bonding time. Engage in gentle play, cuddle sessions, and short training exercises. Positive interactions help your puppy associate you with safety and enjoyment. Remember to reward good behavior with treats and praise.

Day 4: Introducing Socialization

Early socialization is crucial for your puppy’s development. Begin introducing them to various sights, sounds, and people. Gradually expose them to different environments, both indoors and outdoors. This exposure helps prevent fearfulness and ensures a well-adjusted adult dog. However make sure the puppy is only allowed in your yard or carried to other destinations. Puppies who have not been fully vaccinated are susceptible to diseases.

Day 5: Vet Check and Health Care

Within the first week, schedule a visit to the veterinarian for a thorough health checkup. This is the time to discuss vaccinations, preventive measures, and any concerns you might have. Start a record of your puppy’s medical history for future reference.

Day 6: Sleep and Relaxation

Puppies need plenty of rest to support their growth and development. Provide a comfortable sleeping area (we HIGHLY recommend crate training!) where they can relax without disruptions. A soft bed or blanket can make your puppy’s resting space inviting and cozy.

Day 7: Patience and Patience

We can’t stress this enough!!!! Remember that the first week is an adjustment period for both you and your puppy. Patience is key as you navigate challenges such as housebreaking, teething, and adjusting to new routines. Celebrate small victories and show understanding during setbacks.
